A virginal membrane is a fold of vaginal mucosa which covers the vaginal entrance and is only 2-3 cm away from the inner vulvar lips. Each woman has a unique membrane. Its size, looks, shape, thickness, blood vessels and nerves have their own peculiarities. That’s why all women experience different deflorations. A virginal membrane might have one opening which can be large or small, or there might be several openings. They are required for the menstrual blood to come out. Why do they need a virginal membrane? Most scientists can only shrug their shoulders when one asks them about that. Only humans, anthropoid apes and some kinds of antelopes have virginal membranes. Its purpose is absolutely unclear though it is common knowledge that the nature doesn’t create anything “for nothing”. Some people believe a virginal membrane is a rudimentary organ which remained as a result of evolutional development. Some researchers believe it’s useful to keep the vagina clean. It’s true that after the membrane is broken the vaginal microflora changes greatly and gets more bacterized.
A virginal membrane can be broken by chance in case of an injury, if a girl goes too far with masturbation or in case of unfortunate physical exercises as it happens with gymnasts. The same thing might happen when a girl inserts a vaginal tampon into her small orifice in a wrong way. This happens quite often. Mothers in such countries as India, Brazil and Chili wash lower parts of their little girls so actively that a virginal membrane can be absolutely broken when they are still very young.
There wasn’t any notion like “woman’s virginity” in the full sense of these words in some Middle Eastern countries. At maturity (at the age of 13-14 as a rule) a girl would have to undergo a ceremony of “ordination to the womanhood”. A girl had to sit on a wooden cock which belonged to a statue of the god of love. After that she was considered to be a woman and she had a right to get married. Woe betide any girl who didn’t give her first woman’s blood to the god which meant she had already become a woman before the ceremony. She was supposed to be profane and they would banish her out of her village.
